Swim uphill and preach to yourself

“Are you going to choose to be a victim of your day, or are you going to choose to seek Me?”

WOAH.

Talk about CONVICTION.

That whisper hit my heart and I suddenly realized that I had been sulking in my own muddy thoughts for days.

It doesn’t take much for our own hearts to insult ourselves.

If you’re not careful, you will find yourself miles down a stream you had no idea you were floating down. A stream of malicious, hurtful, unforgiving thoughts. A stream of lies that disguise themselves as familiar neighbors who cause no harm and quietly reside in your heart.

The truth is: these thoughts are not your friendly neighbors. They are your fleshly enemies and want nothing more than to rip you apart.

They will egg you on to dwell on the disappointments of your day. They will mock you, and tease you, and never let up on you. It’s easy to hear them and it’s easy to believe them.

It’s an uphill swim, however, to counter what they say and grab hold of the victory you have over them.

These lies need to be called out and challenged, or else they will haunt you and tear you up from the inside out.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”

Psalm 42:11

The psalmist here begins to question his own soul. He calls it out. He asks “Why are you cast down?” He challenges his own flesh, and begins to preach to himself: “HOPE IN GOD”.

John Piper defines biblical hope as “the confident expectation and desire for something good in the future”.

He also encourages fellow Christ-followers to preach to themselves! We get to follow in the psalmist’s footsteps and preach to our hearts about this hope.

This uphill swim requires us to actively talk to ourselves.

If we ain’t talkin’ to ourselves, we are listening to ourselves.

And honey, if you’re passively listening to yourself, you are allowing the destruction of your heart, soul, and mind.

And you can’t minister well from a destructed heart.

…SO PREACH.

Preach your little heart out. Sit down, write a sermon for crying out loud! Seek His word; His truths. Preach them over and over until the sun goes down. Preach them out loud in your car until your voice gives out.

Flip the pages of His word until your fingertips are worn down. Don’t passively float down the stream of destruction.

Sometimes you need to speak it out. Don’t stand idle and watch the destruction.

O my Soul,

You ARE chosen and filled with purpose.

You ARE fought for and relentlessly pursued.

GOD WILL BE GOOD TO YOU. Be certain of it.

He is faithful.

You are of value, and worth more than rubies.

There is a mighty King, the Sustainer of the Universe, and He is jealous of your affection.

You were created to fill the position ONLY YOU CAN. There has never been and never will be anyone like you.

There will be a day of incomprehensible joy in your future. You are promised it and no one can come in between you and that promise.

You. Are. Loved.

Cherished.

Exceptionally valued.

Important.

Do not be downcast and do not be anxious.

God. Will. Be. Good. To. You.

“You are disgusting.”
“You’ll never be good enough.”
“Just look at all your failures. You ARE a failure.”
“You’ll never be like her.”
“You aren’t wanted.”
“You will never be successful.”
“You are a disgrace.”
“You are identified by your flaws. Everyone sees them.”
“They determine your worthiness, so you better try and please them/impress them.”

Today I wrote out some of the lies that creep into my thoughts. There are days where I can’t see outside of myself, and I dwell obsessively over my shortcomings.

The lies that seem to be whispered easily become anthems I tell myself.

I not only hear these falsities, but I believe them. Quickly following my belief in them comes me repeating them to myself.

Such a vicious cycle.

I hope I’m not the only Jesus girl out there who falls into this trap. A trap filled with slavery and bondage that consumes you from the inside out. A trap that robs you of your joy and security… Making a joke of your freedoms and identity.

I AM PUTTING MY FOOT DOWN.

I, once again, am stomping on the words of the enemy and take my rightful authority over him and his evil army.

In JESUS’ name, I am reaching out to my sisters out there who can’t seem to get out of this whirlpool of shame, guilt, comparison, pride.

In JESUS’ name, I am proclaiming truth based on God’s word over myself:

1. I am loved.

2. I am cherished.

3. I am without flaw.

4. I am cared for.

5. I stand righteous before the throne of the creator and sustainer of the Universe.

6. I am FOREVER HIS.

Pride is when we focus inwardly on ourselves. The fruit of pride is no fruit at all… Only peace-hindering, joy-stealing, anger-provoking death.

Humility– true humility– happens when we look beyond ourselves. We look to Him to find our peace. We open His word to discover our identity. We worship Him to experience our purpose.

Jesus.

Only Jesus.

My hope on the crappiest of days. My peace when I’m obsessed over my flaws. My joy when I don’t know where to turn.

I look to Him.

There I am true. There, I am free.

You too, my friend, have access to this glory.

Look up.
